Theory Test Terminal
[ Image Placeholder ]What is Singapore's Theory Test System?
Singapore's driving theory test system is administered by the Traffic Police (TP), a division of the Singapore Police Force. All tests are conducted at Approved Driving Centres (ADCs) — namely CDC, BBDC, and SSDC — as well as at the TP Driving Test Centre on New Bridge Road.
There are two mandatory theory tests every aspiring car driver must pass before obtaining their driving licence: the Basic Theory Test (BTT) and the Final Theory Test (FTT). Motorcyclists seeking a Class 2B licence are required to pass the BTT only.
Both tests are fully computerised, using touch-screen terminals at the test centres. Questions are multiple-choice and results are displayed immediately upon submission. The tests are designed to assess your knowledge of the Singapore Highway Code, road signs, traffic rules, and safe driving practices.

What to Expect Inside the Test
Both the BTT and FTT use the same computerised test environment. Here is exactly what happens when you sit down at the terminal.
Question Types
Multiple-choice questions (MCQ) with 2 to 4 answer options. Many questions include real road scenario images, photographs of road signs, or diagrams of junction situations. The FTT additionally includes hazard perception style questions requiring you to assess risks in driving scenarios.
Navigation Freedom
You can move freely between questions during the test — go forward, go back, skip and return to any question at any time. You only submit when you are fully ready. A question counter on screen shows your progress and which questions you have flagged for review.
Computerised & Instant
Tests are conducted on touch-screen computer terminals at designated test halls within ADCs or the TP Driving Test Centre. No paper, no pen. Your result is displayed immediately on screen upon submission, along with your score breakdown.
6 Languages
Choose your preferred language before the test starts at the terminal. Available in English, Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, Hindi, and Punjabi. You cannot switch languages mid-test. The choice of language does not affect your results or score in any way.
Pro Tip: How Image-Based Questions Work
Many questions in both the BTT and FTT include photographs or diagrams that simulate real road situations. These might show a junction from the driver's perspective and ask who has right-of-way, or show a road sign and ask its meaning. The best preparation is not just memorising answers, but understanding the reasoning behind each rule — this way, even unfamiliar scenarios will make logical sense to you.

How to Register and Book Your Theory Test
The registration and booking process is straightforward. Follow these steps to secure your test slot.
Enrol at an ADC (or register with TP directly for BTT)
You must first be enrolled at an Approved Driving Centre (CDC, BBDC, or SSDC) to access the full licensing process including BTT, FTT, and practical lessons. Alternatively, if you only want to sit the BTT without ADC enrolment, you can register directly with the Traffic Police via their e-Services portal at onemotoring.lta.gov.sg.
Book Your Test Slot Online or at the Counter
Log in to your ADC's online portal and navigate to the theory test booking section. Select your preferred date, time slot, and language. Alternatively, visit your ADC's service counter in person to make a booking. Payment of the $6.50 test fee is required at time of booking. Test slots can fill up quickly, especially during popular periods — book early.
Arrive 15 Minutes Before Your Scheduled Time
Report to the test hall reception area at least 15 minutes before your scheduled test time. Late arrivals may be barred from entering. The test centre staff will register your attendance and direct you to your assigned terminal seat.
Bring Your NRIC or Passport (No Exceptions)
You must present a valid photo identity document — Singapore NRIC, FIN card, or passport — at the test centre. Your identity will be verified before you are allowed to enter the test hall. No identification means no test, and your test fee will not be refunded. Foreign residents must also carry their valid Singapore pass or permit.
Complete the Test on the Terminal
Select your preferred language on the touch-screen terminal, read the instructions carefully, and begin. Answer all 50 questions at your own pace within the time limit. Use the question panel to navigate and flag questions you want to revisit. When satisfied, submit your answers.
Receive Your Result Immediately
Your result is displayed instantly on the terminal screen after submission — Pass or Fail, along with your score. If you pass, you may proceed to book your practical lessons or next test. If you fail, you can rebook your next attempt immediately through your ADC's online system or counter.
8 Proven Tips to Pass Your Theory Test
These tips come from learners who have aced both the BTT and FTT. Apply them consistently and give yourself the best chance of passing first time.
Use Practice Tests Daily
Consistent daily practice with real-format MCQs is the single most effective way to prepare. Even 20–30 minutes a day builds familiarity with question styles and helps identify your weak areas so you can focus your study time wisely.
Focus on Road Signs
Road signs are heavily tested in both the BTT and FTT. Learn the categories: warning signs (triangular), regulatory signs (circular), and informatory signs. Pay attention to colours — red means prohibition, blue means information. Our Road Signs guide covers all signs tested.
Learn the Highway Code
The Singapore Highway Code is the definitive reference for all theory test content. Read it thoroughly at least once. Pay special attention to chapters on right-of-way, speed limits, road markings, pedestrian crossings, and overtaking rules. Understanding the logic behind the rules makes answers more intuitive.
Understand Right-of-Way Rules
Right-of-way is one of the most tested and most misunderstood topics. Learn the rules at junctions without traffic lights, at roundabouts, when turning right, and when merging. These scenario-based questions account for a significant portion of the test and require logical understanding, not rote memorisation.
Know Singapore-Specific Rules
Singapore has specific regulations enforced by LTA and TP that may differ from other countries. These include ERP gantry rules, bus lane operating hours, yellow box junction rules, no-honking zones, and speed camera zones. If you hold an overseas licence, be especially attentive to these Singapore-specific rules.
Take a Full 50-Question Practice Test
Before sitting the real test, simulate actual test conditions by completing a full 50-question timed practice test. This helps you manage time, develop pacing, and get comfortable with the pressure of answering 50 questions consecutively. Aim to consistently score 47–50 in practice before booking your real test.
Read Feedback on Wrong Answers
Don't just note which answers were wrong — understand why they were wrong. Reading the explanation for each incorrect answer teaches you the underlying principle. This is far more valuable than simply memorising the correct option, because the real test may phrase the same concept differently.
Rest Well Before Test Day
A well-rested mind performs significantly better than an exhausted one. Get a full night's sleep before your test. Avoid cramming the night before — by that point, you should have already covered all the material. Have a proper meal, arrive early, and stay calm. The test is manageable with good preparation.
What Happens If You Don't Pass?
Don't be discouraged. Many learners don't pass on their first attempt. Here is exactly what to do next.
BTT Retake Policy
- No mandatory waiting period — you can book the very next available slot immediately
- Pay the $6.50 test fee again for each attempt
- Unlimited attempts — there is no cap on how many times you can retake
- Review the areas you struggled with before rebooking
- Most learners pass within 1–3 attempts with adequate preparation
FTT Retake Policy
- No mandatory waiting period — book the next available slot at your ADC
- Pay the $6.50 test fee again for each retake
- Unlimited attempts permitted
- Focus extra attention on hazard perception questions — often the trickiest part of the FTT
- Revisit the Advanced Theory textbook chapters covering eco-driving and expressway driving
Cost per Retake: ~$6.50
At just $6.50 per attempt, retaking the BTT or FTT is affordable. Rather than panicking about failing, treat each attempt as a learning experience. Identify exactly which question types tripped you up, revisit those topics on SGDriving.sg, and come back stronger. The pass rate for people who consistently practice with real-format questions is significantly higher on subsequent attempts.
